Last year, I had the opportunity to meet up with a blog reader. He loved reading my articles and even stayed up late to try to consume as much material as possible. However, before that reader met up with me, he did have some significant concerns. In most of my articles, I will always have a footnote below where I will offer to meet up with you and share my knowledge of the property market. The sharing is free of charge with no terms and conditions. Coffee is also optional by the way.
So, the question is this. Why would I readily give out this information? Understanding the real estate market is extremely important and having crucial knowledge is invaluable. You are looking at a decision that costs millions of dollars will ultimately change your life. The choice you make can be the difference between making a small fortune where you can upgrade to a bigger home. Or losing your entire initial capital and limit your choices in the future. There are even gurus and trainers who make their living by selling courses to teach you how to make that small fortune. So why do I share this knowledge for free, and what do I have to gain from this?
The Goose and The Golden Egg
First, I would like to introduce you to Aesop’s fable of “The Goose and the Golden Egg”. If you have not read this story before, it is about a poor farmer who discovers one day that his goose has laid a golden egg. At first, he thought it was a trick and brought the egg back home to test. To his surprise, the egg has made of real gold, and he was incredibly happy with his find. The very next day, he went back to the goose and found another egg. The same thing happened, day after day.
We all know how the story ends. The farmer ended up getting impatient because there was only going to be one egg a day. How is the farmer going to buy all the things he wanted with only one egg per day? He ended up killing the goose to see if he can collect all the eggs at one go. Unfortunately, there was nothing inside the poor dead goose.
Parallels Between the Golden Goose and My Free Sharing
So how does the story of the golden goose has got to with precession and my free sharing? If you have read the “7 habits of highly effective people”, you will realize the parallel between the golden goose and what I do. To get the golden eggs, you must first have the goose. The golden eggs cannot precede nor exist without the goose.
Unfortunately, a lot of people today are chasing after the golden eggs. With the prevalence of social media, individual success becomes especially important, and there is social anxiety to be keeping up with the Jones. Once you see someone acquire something nice, you would want to accumulate these symbols of wealth. In most cases, within the shortest possible time. However, during this chase, some people will forget about how the golden eggs are made and will do whatever it takes to accumulate this wealth. Sometimes, even things that are legally, morally, and ethically wrong.
Remember Where Your Golden Eggs Come From
To get the best relationship out of every interaction, it must be a win-win situation. In addition to taking care of our clients, I believe it is equally important that they see you as a “golden goose”. If you can dispense invaluable knowledge and empower them with golden nuggets of information, these clients will keep you around for a long time. And during this time, they may refer their families and friends to you. Of course, there are those who simply need validation for their decision, and I will usually never hear from them again.
The Other Reason Why I Share My Knowledge for Free
There is another reason why I will continue to write this blog and meet people over coffee. For real estate agents in Singapore, the transactional fees are decent enough for some to become millionaires. However, the customer acquisition costs are astronomically high, and only a small percentage who consistently spend and market themselves will get into this category. I do not want to put myself in a situation where I am pressured to collect the golden eggs just because I spent too much money to arrive at the nest. Instead, I adopt this low cost, low-stress method to acquire clients where we start a long-term relationship. And drink plenty of coffee in the process.
I believe after reading this article; you would have a better understanding of why I share my knowledge with you. There is no hidden agenda to sell you any courses or pressure you into signing an exclusive purchase agreement. There is always much to gain from every interaction, and you will be surprised at what I learn every time I speak with someone new. Of course, there is also the incredible satisfaction of helping people reach their goals.
