HYPE, a rooftop solar system, energy recovery ventilation (ERV), optimised insulation and glazing and good design pillars have been implemented into the development from project conception to create highly efficient dwellings with 100% renewable energy supply and a NatHERS Star rating of 7.5-stars.
Net Zero Energy
Fareham is targeting to require net zero energy in operations. The building’s energy requirements will be minimised by designing highly efficient dwellings (min 7.5-Star average NatHERS) using passive house principles.
Solar PV (44 x 415W photovoltaic panels producing 18.26kWp) to offset base building power usage and supplement electric heat pump domestic hot water systems.
Future Proofed
Fareham will be future proofed including load managed electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, which will allow EV charge stations to be installed easily in the future.
Fareham’s location also means that residents will have easy access to public transport, and live within walking distance to necessities and local shopping. Cycling will be made easy through secure ground floor bike parking, as well as a bike workshop for repairs and maintenance.
Water Friendly
A central 20kL rainwater tank will be installed for capturing rainwater for reuse in occupant toilet flushing and courtyard irrigation.
Water efficient fixtures and fittings will be installed throughout the development, as well as drought tolerant plants to minimise landscape watering requirements. Tap and floor waste provided on each balcony
Healthy Spaces
Natural ventilation, ceiling fans and energy recovery ventilation. Optimised glazing throughout including double glazing, thermally broken windows and low-E coatings.
The building will utilise low VOC materials including paints, adhesives, sealants, and carpets for healthy indoor air quality. Geoff Nees Artist
Geoff Nees is a Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist whose work mediates between intimate studio craft and big picture public works. The later are borne from a unification of art, design and architecture and seek to deepen human engagement and beautify the public realms they sit within.
Beginning with the simple progeny of pencil and paper, Geoff’s pieces emerge from studies in pattern and composition, evolving throughout a journey mapping intuitive enquiries into the consequences of adding and taking away, and the transformative visual changes cultivated by the introduction of light upon the solids and voids that result.
At Fareham, Geoff’s work gilds the building’s facade, enveloping its contours and responding to the colours, rhythms, forms and materiality of the surrounding streetscape. From its initial paper genesis, the work has taken on the essence of a carved relief through a collaborative process that employs cnc technology to impress the geometric expressions of the original paper and pencil design onto large-format, 500cm2 stone tiles reminiscent of the natural sandstone in the surrounding beachside locale.
Bathed in the golden morning sun, the sculptural effect of the artwork comes into full effect when viewed from the vantage point of commuters on passing trams, drivers and passengers in cars moving along the busy street and those walking on the far side of St Kilda Road. In a relationship that has been considered from macro to micro, the design then shifts in perspective as it is experienced closer up.
On approach to the building, its tactility and natural materiality coax a closer, more intimate engagement, highlighting the precision and resolve of the architecture through an emphasis on contrasts in the porous imperfection of the artwork’s stone and the detailed ornamentation of its design intricacy.
Upon entering the building, the resident and visitor experience is subtly enhanced by Geoff’s work which unexpectedly doubles in height just beyond the threshold between exterior and interior. Rather than reducing to a human-scale, a generous tension is conjured by proportions which appear to soaring. An intimate immensity is shaped within the atmosphere lending the building a definitive singularity which residents feel welcomed by and attached to. One that shifts and alters with the elements — as sunlight sabres in to wash across the valleys of the carved surface; as rain darkens the stone; as plants cast their shadows upon it — to establish a sense of place that is intrinsically linked to home.
In its rationalised, modernist composition Geoff’s work becomes an embellishment upon the built environment, respecting rather than dominating its surroundings. It is a literal and figurative touchstone at Fareham, never to be viewed in full but rather alluding to its entirety through the calming logic of its pattern language. Through its rich consolidation of art, architecture and design, the work takes on the functionality of a wayfinding tool, becoming a compass point on a journey for passersby and a welcoming signal for those visiting or returning home.
